Dear Friend,
What does it mean to seek the face of God?
We know God sees us. We know he is omnipresent and available to meet at any given moment. We need not even ask for God’s presence because Jesus asks for us. “I will ask the Father,” Jesus promises, “and he will give you the Spirit of God, who will never leave you.” (John 14:16).
So how do we miss him? The breakdown is with you and me.
God is always ready to meet with us, but we are not always prepared to meet with him. Any perceived distance between God and us comes from our side of the relationship.
God is imminent, but we are prone to wander.
Imagine being distracted while walking through a crowd with a friend. You wander off while your friend strolls on. In this case, it is not your friend who leaves you. It is you who departs from your friend. To get back, you have to seek his face in the crowd.
Likewise, wandering thoughts crowd-out our view of the ever-present God.
To seek his face is to focus all of your energy on getting back to God. In making this effort, you must strain your mind’s eye to envision yourself looking at God’s face as a friend meets a friend.
Each morning take time to pursue God. Fight for him. Exert your imagination. Take hold of God, and don’t let go. When you look God in the face, you will see that he is already looking at you.
Once you experience such intimacy with God in the early hours, you can easily spot him in the people and circumstances that come your way throughout a busy day.
“Seek the Lord while he may be found;
Call to him while he is near.”
(Isaiah 55:6)
In Christ,
